At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a boy named Shepherd. His being was pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to care for his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the murmuring of the gales among the solo tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
But, there were the occasional read more moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. But, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
